Vine co-creator Dom Hofmann has officially launched Byte, which is a six-second sequel to the iconic looping app that gave us timeless memes and viral stars before its death in 2016. But it will not be all fun and games for Byte as it faces some hefty competition in the form of a $75 billion social media giant, TikTok.
The two short video-sharing apps have similar minimalist branding and product design. But what makes Byte REALLY stand out is that it solves a popular problem that many Tik Tok creators are experiencing... Byte offers the opportunity for their creators to make MONEY from their content. Byte officially announced that they will be giving 100% of their advertisement revenue to their creators.
This is HUGE news, as no other social media platform (other than Youtube) has a viable monetization opportunity like this. But even with this monetary lure for creators to migrate to Byte, the question remains, will it work? Will people leave other apps like Tik Tok to spend more time on Byte? Is Tik Tok officially dead?
Before we can answer that, let's talk about Tik Tok...
Tik Tok is doing much more than just replacing Vine or other similar social media apps, it has earned its way to now compete against the other big players in the market. Tik Tok serves a different purpose than YouTube, Instagram, or Snapchat. Its platform is mainly aimed at content creators, allowing easy access to filters, augmented reality, music, and many other features that allows anyone to become a content creator.
Not to mention that Tik Tok is a behemoth with 1 billion video views every day. The average Tik Tok user spends 52 minutes per day on the app and LOL I can absolutely attest to that myself, I'll scroll on Tik Tok for an hour before bed... I know, it's a bad habit HAHA. Tik Tok also has over 500 million users worldwide.
Even though I have a bias towards Tik Tok, I wanted to give Byte a fair chance. So I downloaded the app and used Byte for a few days and I can tell it is still very much in its infancy stages. It lacks many of the features that make Tik Tok attractive like filters and a hashtag system. With all of this in mind, I don't believe Byte will be killing Tik Tok anytime soon.
But as a content creator looking to create an extra stream of income, should you incorporate Byte into your social media strategy?
Will I be posting content on Byte? Is it even worth it?
We MUST consider the opportunity that Byte presents to us. I ask myself, "What would GaryVee tell us?" and I believe he would encourage us to take advantage of the organic reach and exposure of such a young app. Plus YOU CAN MAKE MONEY FROM IT! I will be posting the occasional Byte lol
I hope you enjoyed the video! :)
