What if you want to get better at DJing and don’t have your gear with you? Kids in bed? On a business trip? Delayed at an airport? Or maybe you just don’t have your controller with you and you wanna spin?
In this lesson we’ll talk about 3 ways you can practise DJing just about anywhere. Master them all and you'll find yourself practising much more, and getting better much faster.
1. DJing with just your laptop
First, try DJing with just your laptop’s keyboard - great when you don't have your controller.
Almost all DJ software lets you do this, and if you’ve got access to speakers, try bringing your DJ splitter cable too so you can use your DJ headphones for cueing. Check your DJ app’s manual to know the keyboard shortcuts which will come in handy if you want to practise this way.
2. DJing in just your headphones
Second, try DJing with just your headphones - great when you can’t be noisy like if there are kids sleeping. Use the Cue/Master headphone mix knob on your DJ software or hardware to switch between what the "crowd" would be hearing normally, and what you're cueing in your headphones. (If this is an alien concept to you, I'll explain later on in the course.)
3. DJing on a phone or tablet
Third, try DJing using just your phone or tablet - great for when you've got the urge and don't have your laptop handy. Get the djay for iOS or djay Pro app for it. We think it’s the best and easiest to use app for DJs who want to practise anywhere and also gig, plus at the time of this filming it’s the only smartphone / tablet app that lets you DJ straight from Spotify which in itself is a huge plus.
Master at least one of these three ways for you to practise your DJing whenever, wherever - and then master the rest! They'll help you practice in all kinds of situations where you'd just be wasting time otherwise.
