(30 Oct 2019) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus125899 The NCAA Board of Governors has taken the first step toward allowing athletes to cash in on their fame.
The board has voted unanimously to clear the way for the amateur athletes to "benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness." Pay for play would still be banned.
California passed a law last month that would prevent schools from prohibiting college athletes from being compensated for their names, images and likenesses. That law goes into effect in 2023, but other states are moving on similar legislation that could go into effect as soon as next year.
Associated Press sports columnist Jim Litke says female athletes and those "who have an outside shot" of making the pros would be the biggest beneficiaries of these new rules.
Litke also says that because the proposed rules wouldn't go into effect until 2021, "it's hard to say at this point how monumental or small this ripple will end up being."
