Garage and casita project retaining wall build part 1 of 2 03022020

Garage and casita project retaining wall build part 1 of 2 03022020 The masonry team (Mike Cline Masonry) showed up today and got the wall built in just a few hours. We had to wait a few weeks for this step to happen because of how busy the building industry is these days plus the fact that it is getting to be more and more difficult to hire people to do this kind of hard physical labor. Mike's crew has shrunk from 12 to 6, and one of the 6 got injured, so Mike is down to a crew of just 5 at this time, but they worked hard and knocked out this wall quickly. There will be a part 2 of this step in the project, hopefully tomorrow if the weather cooperates where the holes in the blocks will be filled with what Mike calls "grout" to provide additional rigidity and strength to the wall. Mike tells me the average age of construction workers in the US is 54. Mike also says that they have more work than they can keep up with at this time. Mike (in the black shirt) is 63 and the two main block layers are mid 50s and early 60's. The have both been with Mike for 25+ years. Manuel (the guy in the blue baseball cap) is the guy who did my paver driveway. I worked on the driveway project as a laborer helping to carry pavers for Manuel and carried 4 pavers at a time with a special tool. Each paver is 8 lbs., so 4 would be32 lbs. That may not sound like much, but if you do it hundreds of time over a weekend in 100+ degree heat, it is tough work!!! As if his day job is not tough enough, Manuel works most weekends on his own doing side projects to provide a better life for his family. We could all take a lesson from him.
