Lanarkshire Police Division is asking anyone who saw "people hanging about the cars or the back of the houses" on Inchwood Road in Cumbernauld on Sunday night.
Callous firebugs set fire to a grey Hyundai Tuscan in the suburb north of Glasgow last night.
The blaze spread to two cars parked nearby and officers believe if someone had not spotted it could have spread to houses on the residential street.
Two other cars, a Peugeot and a Kia were damaged in the fire, which was put out by emergency services last night at around 11.20pm on Sunday night.
Detective Sergeant Ronnie Douglas, Lanarkshire CID, said today:
"We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen people hanging about the cars or the back of the houses between 11.20 and 11.30 last night.
"Information can be passed to officers at Lanarkshire CID, Coatbridge Police Station, via 101. Please quote reference number 4177 of 16 February 2020 when calling. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
