How Superior Firepower In Combat Looks Like - US Marines Heavy Firefight During Battle Of Ramadi

This video is one of the best examples of the concept of superior firepower in combat. It shows all the stages of a firefight including the effective use of suppressive fire and close air support.

Fire Superiority means that one side is able to fire more rounds and/or more accurately than the other who becomes 'suppressed. ' 'Pinning down the enemy' can be complicated and difficult, or simple.

The video was filmed by US marines during a heavy firefight with Iraqi insurgens during the Battle for Ramadi.

The man who recorded this video was awarded a bronze star and a combat v for valor and the big building you see beeing the main target of the combat action was called "swiss cheese".

In military science, suppressive fire (commonly called covering fire) is "fire that degrades the performance of an enemy force below the level needed to fulfill its mission". Suppression is usually only effective for the duration of the fire. It is one of three types of fire support, which is defined by NATO as "the application of fire, coordinated with the maneuver of forces, to destroy, neutralize or suppress the enemy."

Before NATO defined the term, the British and Commonwealth armies generally used "neutralization" with the same definition as suppression. NATO now defines neutralization as "fire delivered to render a target temporarily ineffective or unusable."

Firepower is the military capability to direct force at an enemy. (It is not to be confused with the concept of rate of fire, which describes the cycling of the firing mechanism in a weapon system.) Firepower involves the whole range of potential weapons. The concept is generally taught as one of the three key principles of modern warfare wherein the enemy forces are destroyed or have their will to fight negated by sufficient and preferably overwhelming use of force as a result of combat operations.

Through the ages firepower has come to mean offensive power applied from a distance, thus involving ranged weapons as opposed to one-on-one close quarters combat. Firepower is thus something employed to keep enemy forces at a range where they can be defeated in detail or sapped of the will to continue.
