BEAT HAMSTRING INJURY & SPRINT FASTER AND JUMP FURTHER In this video coach John Shepherd ( takes a look at the hamstrings from two perspectives:
How to pre-train these muscles to combat injury (known as pre-training) and why they should be specifically trained to increase speed.
In the first pre-training part John takes a look at eccentric exercises and also touches upon the thoughts of muscle slack and an actual isometric component to the hamstrings when they are engaged in the sprinting movement. Various exercises are described and shown, such as the band standing sprint rotation, Swiss ball hamstring curls and other leg cycling drills.
There's also a discussion on the role of weight training and the Nordic Hamstring Curl/ Research is noted that back ups the benefits of the NHC.
The role of the hip region is also considered and the value of the Romanian Dead-lift.
In the second part of the video John discusses the contribution of the hamstrings to sprinting and why these muscles are crucial. He also considers via some research why female athletes should concentrate on these muscles.
At the end John talks about his usage of the Freelap timing system.
