You should all of heard the saying, that nothing good last's forever. LaMelo Ball's time with the Illawarra Hawks was something truly special to behold, not only did succeed in his goal of re-establishing himself as one of the top prospects in his draft class. But in time we'll realize his greatest accomplishment, was leaving a trail for others to follow his in his path, LaMelo put the NBL on a global scale, fans from all across the world were tuning into Illawarra hawks games. People who otherwise wouldn't be paying attention. Melo made history both on and off the court, becoming the youngest player in league history to record a triple-double, and blowing previous NBL records out of the water for attendance. As bad as the Illawarra Hawks were, the worst team in the country no debate. It was an amazing spectacle for us as fans, and great for the game beyond the NBA.
A few months from now once Melo's name is called among the first in the 2020 NBA draft, you can best believe we'll see more elite prospects than ever before. Bypass the traditional college route and join the next stars program. Where they can make money, and face competition and improving pro competition.
I say all of this in the past tense, because as of a few hours ago. Jermaine Jackson Melo's manager speaking on his behalf with ESPN revealed that Lamelo won't be returning to the NBL this season. Meaning that he has played his last game for the Illawarra Hawks. It's pretty common knowledge that Melo has missed the last 6 weeks with injury, and with the Hawks already eliminated from postseason contention. It comes as no real surprise to see him shut it down for the remainder of the season, which concludes mid-February.
As much as i would've liked to see him return live in person for the Hawks final 2 games vs the Sydney Kings and the RJ Hampton's new Zealand breakers, I can't deny that shutting down is in his best interests. This is different from the Zion Williamson case with Duke last year, who still had a national championship to play for at Duke. Melo, on the other hand, has next to nothing to play for with the Hawks. And although standout performances against the breakers and kings, would only enhance his probability of being the number1 pick in the draft. The risk of further injury is, in this case, is one not worth taking. Jackson also added that that the personal doctors they're dealing with, advises that players should spend as much time rehabbing, as they do when sidelined.
Now as much sense as this makes, the one thing we can't ignore. Is the reported $100 million dollar sneaker endorsement and how that might factor into all of this. Because not only would further injury potentially impact where he's picked in the draft. It could also jeopardize the $100 million dollars supposedly already on the table depending on the severity.
Lamelo has done more than enough already to solidify his name at the top of the draft boards. For the season he averaged 17.5 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds per game. So whether or not he's picked 1st overall, will now depend on the draft order and what the needs are of the said team picking first. For example, I can't imagine the Warriors, with Steph, KD, and D'Angelo. Going ahead and drafting another guard when they can grab a James Wiseman. What kind of impression is made of Lamelo and other top prospects at pre-draft workouts, will also play a huge part too? One thing that's interesting that has proved to both an advantage and disadvantage for Lamelo, is the NBL's schedule. Because while Lamelo's draft stock benefited by his season starting back in September/October and was able to earn an impression from scouts before the rest of his peers in college, Him having not played since December could backfire come march madness, factoring in the inevitable reality that is recency bias.
All in all, though you can write it in stone, that Lamelo is going top 5 in the 2020 NBA Draft. He's leapfrogged the likes of Cole Anthony, Nico Mannion, RJ Hampton, and all the other guard prospects, that were ranked above him by ESPN at the start of the season.
