Hundreds of women protesters take to Basra streets

Hundreds of women protesters take to Basra streets (2 Dec 2019) Hundreds of Iraqi women took to the streets of Basra on Sunday in solidarity with the protests across the country.

It was the first women demonstration in the Shiite oil-rich city where demonstrators have been targeting the state's economic interests.

The protest came after the resignation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi over the weekend.

Elsewhere in Basra, demonstrators staged a sit-in and cut roads to the West Qurna 1 oil field, operated by ExxonMobil.

The field, among the country’s largest, produces over 450,000 barrels of oil per day.

Protesters also continued to block roads to the country’ main Gulf commodities port in Umm Qasr.

At least 400 people have been killed since Oct. 1, when thousands took to the streets in mass protests in Baghdad and the predominantly Shiite south.
