I was talking to a friend at work about comic books, and he asked me how I feel about Jonathan Hickman’s House of X and Powers of X(10) books. I told him I was enjoying this run due to the fact that Hickman was breathing new life into the X-men universe after years of subpar storytelling. He told me that he is enjoying the books as well, but couldn’t shake the feeling that the X-men are becoming evil. I asked my other friends about how they felt about these two books, and certain phrases came up in these conversations. “The X-men feel like villains.”, “The mutants seem like a cult.”, “They believe themselves to be gods,” are just a few things that were said, and this got me thinking about how we view “evil” in a sense. The way Hickman writes the X-men seems to hint at they are becoming more sinister; however, I do not believe that is the case. I believe the X-men have turned away from their original goal of co-existent with humanity and have focused on ensuring that their people thrive in a world that hates them, by any mean necessary.
