Short and Sharp 15 Minute Pro Goalkeeper Activation Session

Short and Sharp 15 Minute Pro Goalkeeper Activation Session We had a short time in our keeper session today before joining the team, and so we focused on movements in a small area, maximizing game realistic touches, and compounding a few activities to make sure that the keepers were ready for team action. This was initially drawn up to be a 35-40 minute session, but this was reduced to 15 minutes by the coach as we were covering more tactical applications in the team environment. As a coach at any level, you must be comfortable with adjusting your session on the fly due to space limitations or time restraints. We have ALL been there, as training space is smaller than expected or the coach’s plans change at the last minute. We must make sure the keepers are prepared, regardless of these situations!

The Activities!

1. WARM-UP: DIAGONAL FOOTWORK AND HANDLING:

We get the legs and hands warmed up, with basic footwork on a diagonal line before setting square quickly to receive the volley.

2. VOLLEY, BLOCK, AND SHOT –

Here we combine a few movements due to the shortened time to get ready for team training, using a volley, a block/k barrier save, and resetting for a shot, which also simulates a second save situation off the block save. Short sharp movement is key without overtaxing the keepers physically.

3. 2 TOUCH PASS AND DOUBLE SAVE –

As this is the last activity before joining the team, we introduced playing the ball with the feet. The keepers then move to make a save from the opposite side to the pass, and then come back for a shot from the area of the initial pass. This activity is intended to get the keepers tuned in to lateral movement, set position, and of course, clean execution with both feet.
