If you've ever suffered from any type of back injury or are currently suffering from it, you understand how debilitating it is!

And if you weren't already aware, Back Injuries are #6 on the list out of the top 10 most claimed disabilities among Veterans.

After reviewing their medical records, many Veterans may find that they have a current diagnosis of PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY or RADICULOPATHY.

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

This occurs when there is damage to the Peripheral Nerve, which can cause pain, weakness, and numbness.

Think of it as pain AWAY FROM the central part of the body.

If you are experiencing some sort of nerve pain, nerve discomfort, or tingling in your extremities, this is Peripheral Neuropathy.

Some common causes of Peripheral Neuropathy are Side effects of medications, Chemotherapy, Inflammatory diseases, alcoholism, traumatic injuries, autoimmune diseases.

RADICULOPATHY

Radiculopathy, on the other hand, is Nerve Damage to the nerve root that exits the spinal cord.

These nerves run to the end of your extremities.

This type of damage is visible on an MRI.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET RATED FOR PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY & RADICULOPATHY?

The best and most effective way to get rated for Peripheral Neuropathy and Radiculopathy is through Secondary Service Connection if you apply for VA disability benefits.

The reason for this is because if a Veteran has a current Service-Connected rating for Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) and then a year later gets diagnosed with Radiculopathy, they can then Secondary Service Connect it to their Primary Service Connect DDD.

The same goes for Peripheral Neuropathy.

As described above, Peripheral Neuropathy can have many causes.

Let's say a Veteran suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and was given a Service Connected Rating for it. Then a couple of years later were diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy; they can then file Secondary Service Connection to their Primary Service-Connected TBI.

CORTISONE/ STEROID INJECTIONS

These shots/ injections are used in an attempt to relieve pain and inflammation in the affected area of your body.

Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection is a standard shot used for patients suffering from Lower Back Pain and Sciatica.

It is also used for bone spurs, herniated discs, and other back problems.

The reason these shots work so well is that the injection shuts down the collagen-producing cells in the tendon or joint.

As a result, inflammation is suppressed, nerves are calmed, and the pain you feel is reduced.

The downside to these shots is that repeated use may cause damage to the cartilage within the joint.

So doctors may limit the number of shots you receive.

SECONDARY SERVICE CONNECTIONS FOR MEDICATION SIDE EFFECTS

If you've ever looked at the side effects of medications, you are aware that there are A LOT!

Pain medications, such as Norco (Contains a combination of Hydrocodone & Acetaminophen) and Naproxen, are commonly prescribed for patients with back problems.

These drugs are powerful pain medications and are known to cause many side effects to include headaches, constipation (IBS), anxiety, heartburn, and many more.

The majority of these side effects are ratable by the VA.

If you are taking pain medications for your back and are suffering from side effects that are ratable by the VA, you can file claims for Secondary Service Connection.

Many Veterans are unaware that they can file Secondary Service Connected Disability Claims.

These Secondary Service Connected Claims are rated the same as Primary Service Connection.

If you are a Veteran suffering from any form of Back Pain or Back Conditions and are looking to file a new claim, an increase on an already rated claim or a claim for secondary service connection, we at VA Claims Insider are standing by to help!
