Bogota protesters kept away from main square

Bogota protesters kept away from main square (23 Nov 2019) Security forces in Colombia blocked protesters from reaching the main parliament building in the capital Bogota on Saturday as a heightened police and military presence continued.

Protesters headed towards parliament banging pots and pans, but were dispersed by officers firing smoke bombs.

It was the latest incident to rattle authorities after two days of street protests, following a march on Thursday which drew an estimated 250,000 people.

A senior official said Saturday that 7,000 members of the security forces were deployed around Bogota to “guarantee security.”

Colombia's President Ivan Duque, who imposed a curfew on Friday, has promised to begin a “national conversation” aimed at including students, labour unions and other groups in drafting reforms.
